Fish Audio is an AI voice platform for turning text into natural speech and reusing a voice across products. Its most useful combination is simple: generate speech with S2.1 Pro, create or select a voice, then pass that Voice ID to later requests.
Why Fish Audio is worth trying
- One model for 83 languages: S2.1 Pro detects the input language automatically, which is useful for localized products and mixed-language content.
- Describe delivery in the text: cues such as
[whispers sweetly],[laugh]or[excited]can change expression without a separate emotion enum. - Reusable voices: clone a voice once, receive a Voice ID, and use it as
reference_idin later TTS calls. - A short path from idea to MP3: Free AI API's Playground supports the default voice or an optional Voice ID, then returns an MP3 you can play or download.
What can you build?
- Multilingual narration for videos, podcasts, courses and product demos.
- Voices for games, AI companions and conversational agents.
- Accessible reading, announcements and prototype voice interfaces.
- Consistent branded voices across repeated content, when you own the voice or have permission to use it.
“Free” means two different things
Fish Audio currently has two offers that should not be mixed together:
- The API development model:
s2.1-pro-freeis priced at $0 per million UTF-8 bytes and has the same quality and language coverage ass2.1-pro. It is governed by fair-use limits and does not include TTFA or DPA guarantees, so it is best for evaluation, prototypes, development and smaller workloads. - The Fish Audio website Free Tier: the plan page currently lists 8,000 monthly credits, about 7 minutes of generation, 500 characters per generation and 3 public voice slots, with no credit card required.
The free API model is not a promise of unlimited production capacity. Measure your own latency and move to the production model when you need service guarantees.
Start in four steps
- Create a Fish Audio account.
- Follow the illustrated API Key guide and store the Key securely.
- Open the S2.1 Pro TTS Playground, paste the Key, enter up to 500 characters and generate an MP3 with the default voice.
- If you need a custom voice, use the Voice Cloning endpoint, then paste its Voice ID into the Playground.
Only clone voices you own or have explicit permission to use. Clean reference audio matters more than expensive equipment; Fish Audio recommends at least 10 seconds recorded in a quiet space.
