Free AI API’s goal is AI equity — everyone should get a shot at good AI. Collecting APIs alone isn’t enough: real coding and multi-step work also need Agent developer tools. So when we spot free (or limited-time free) AI Agents, we add them to our recommendations. Yesterday we covered CodeBuddy + Hunyuan 3; today we found Grok 4.5.
xAI launched Grok 4.5 on 8 July 2026 for coding, agentic tasks, and knowledge work. Two free paths worth taking now:
- Limited-time free Grok 4.5 inside Grok Build and Cursor
- Subscribe to SuperGrok (the “Pro” tier): 7 days at $0, then about $30/month — cancel anytime before renewal
Policies change. Treat x.ai’s announcement and grok.com/plans as source of truth (notes as of 2026-07-09).
What is Grok 4.5?
Think of it as both an API model and an Agent engine in your terminal/IDE.
xAI highlights real engineering work — multi-step code edits, terminal workflows, and training focus with Cursor. Serving is roughly ~80 TPS. API list pricing is about $2 / million input tokens and $6 / million output tokens, with claims of fewer tokens and fewer steps on comparable tasks.
For developers, the practical pitch is:
- Faster, more output tokens
- Stronger planning and execution on tasks
- Better, faster code generation
- Lower API cost when token efficiency holds
That’s the vendor story — we won’t rubber-stamp every claim — but we strongly recommend trying it. In our own use, it stayed on-task and executed commands cleanly with little fluff.
How to get free Agent tooling
1. Grok Build (try this first)
Grok Build is a terminal coding Agent: plan mode, subagents, Skills, MCP, multi-file edits, and more. Official docs say Grok 4.5 is free for a limited time.
Install:
curl -fsSL https://x.ai/cli/install.sh | bashThen try it on a real repo: fix bugs, add features, run tests. It works with popular harness config like AGENTS.md and Skills — switching cost is near zero. Docs: docs.x.ai.
2. Limited window in Cursor
Officially, Grok 4.5 is also available for a limited time on all Cursor plans. If you already code in Cursor, switch models and try it. End date isn’t fixed — use the free window while it lasts.
3. How this differs from “AI APIs”
- Free / gateway APIs: scriptable model calls; good for apps and batch work
- Grok Build / Cursor Agent: multi-step agents with repo context; good for day-to-day engineering
- SuperGrok subscription: higher limits and full consumer features; chat, image/video, long sessions
A free AI Agent won’t necessarily plug into your product backend — and we don’t recommend sharing or reselling account quota. We *do* strongly recommend making AI Agents the starting point for more of your work.
SuperGrok 7-day free (Pro tier)
On the plans page, SuperGrok often shows: 7 days at $0, then $30/month. You typically get higher usage, Grok Build-related access, longer chats, and image/video generation (confirm on checkout).
Don’t mix this up with the permanent Free tier:
- Free: always $0, limited quota — fine for light trials
- 7-day trial: near paid experience briefly; bills monthly after unless you cancel in time
- Build / Cursor limited free 4.5: engineering-oriented Agent access; not the full SuperGrok product
Trials usually need a credit card. If you won’t keep it: cancel before the trial ends so you aren’t charged $30.
Who should try now
- Want a terminal Agent on your repo → install Grok Build first
- Live in Cursor → switch to Grok 4.5 during the free window
- Want the full consumer stack (long chat, image/video) → check the SuperGrok 7-day offer
- Shipping product backends → use the official API, or watch FreeAiAPI.org for free Grok-related endpoints if/when they appear
Notes:
- EU: Grok 4.5 not yet available in xAI products or the API console; mid-July expected
- Limited free access and trials can change anytime
- This is not an official xAI notice — always verify on official pages
Next steps: Install Grok Build at x.ai/cli, or check grok.com/plans for the SuperGrok 7-day $0 offer. For free API quotas and other models, keep using freeaiapi.org’s directory and playground.
